Air Berlin: Go online as you fly
Air Berlin announced that they plan to update their entire fleet. WiFi will soon be available onboard each of its 120 aircraft. But there are also plans for another project.
Germany’s second largest airline, Air Berlin, would like to offer WiFi onboard in the future. This allows passengers to have the opportunity to benefit from a larger selection of entertainment media during the flight. This measure would also make Air Berlin more attractive to business travellers. This new addition is now legally possible because the EU has relaxed its strict regulations on th use of mobile phones and laptops during the flight.
Air Berlin proposes three years
It will take around three years for Internet Hotspots to be available on all of their planes, according to Air Berlin CEO, Wolfgang Prock-Schauer. However, it is not yet clear whether the World Wide Web can, in fact, be used, or whether Air Berlin is to offer its own media service via WiFi. The company will announce this later, said Prock-Schauer. However, if Air Berlin manages to bring the Internet above the clouds, they will be ahead of Lufthansa which currently only offers this service on selected long-haul flights.
More comfort with Air Berlin
Before Air Berlin equips its aircrafts with WiFi, there’s still another project that needs to be finalized The airline is currently in the process of installing new seats in Business Class. This applies to all of Air Berlin’s long-haul aircraft which will soon be offering a higher level of comfort. At the same time, Air Berlin is also switching to the standard of its cooperation partner and major shareholder, Etihad Airways, which offers the same seats in its Business Class.
